Castles

Many magnificent castles tell, each in their own way, of the complex, intense history of the Eurometropolis. Their peculiarities? A number of these castles are still inhabited by princely families.

Also called the "Petit Versailles", the castle of Beloeil has been property of the Princes of Ligne since the XIVth century. Located in a splendid French garden of 25 hectares, it is the setting of the annual festival for classical music, the Musicals of Beloeil.

The Ooidonk castle, situated south-west of Ghent, is still the residence of count Horne. This mediaeval building was rebuilt in 1595 by Maarten della Faille, who gave the premises its actual renaissance architecture evoking a far remembrance of the castles of the Loire, such as the Chambord. Each year in April, the castle is the setting of a large garden fair, and in September of an open air opera.

The Green Woods Castle of Bondues, appearing as a genuine jewel of French classical architecture from the XVIIth and XVIIIth century, with houses paintings, sculptures, furniture and gold and silver ware, mostly from the XVIIIth century.

Also the captains of industry wanted to build their castles. The Mill of Roubaix, an industrial castle reconverted into a factory outlet illustrating the textile and trading tradition of the capital city of distance selling, Is a testimony of this.
