Tournai, thousands of years old and city of gastronomy

Tournai, a city with a prestigious past crossed by the Scheldt, is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, along with Arlon and Tongeren. Famous figures such as Clovis, Charles V and even Louis XIV have passed through in the two thousand year history of the city.

Home of important art, Tournai can be discovered in the shadow of its imposing five tower cathedral and its belfry, both listed as Unesco World Heritage. Its beautiful grand place is in the atypical shape of a triangle, cradled by the sound made by jets refreshing water; it gives the feeling of a city bustling with the terraces of many cafes and restaurants (the city has a record number of eating establishments per capita!).  Gourmet city, Tournai is also a city of art known especially for its Saint-Luc art and architecture school. The Fine Arts museum, built in Art Nouveau style by Victor Horta, contains the modern art collection of Henri Van Cutsem, an arts Maecenas of Brussels, and many works of Belgian artists (Ensor, Claus, ...) and Tournai artists (Rogier de la Pasture, Gallait, Pion, ...) and the only two works by Manet exhibited in Belgium.

Tournai is waiting for you!
